St. Charles Catholic had no counter for the one-two punch of Kyren Whittington and Natalie Newberry in the Lady Comets’ 67-42 loss to Northlake Christian in the girls’ Division III quarterfinals Thursday in Covington.
The duo of Whittington and Newberry outscored the entire SCC team, combining for 53 points. Whittington scored 29 points and Newberry 24. Whittington also had 10 rebounds and Newberry nine. Whittington’s 10 steals allowed her to finish with a triple-double.
Northlake Christian (17-13) advances to the semifinals against top-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas. St. Thomas Aquinas defeated No. 8 seed St. Mary’s Academy 52-36.
In other girls’ basketball playoff action Thursday, No. 7 seed Hahnville was ousted from the Class 5A quarterfinals with a 76-45 loss at No. 2 Benton.
St. Charles Catholic (16-8) was limited to six points to trail by eight after one quarter. The Lady Comets outscored Northlake Christian 17-16 in the second quarter to trail 30-23 at halftime.
The Lady Comets trailed 44-35 after three quarters but was limited to eight points in the fourth quarter.
Northlake Christian built double-digit leads but could never put the game away until the fourth quarter when the Lady Comets were in foul trouble.
SCC rallied to within 17-15 early in the second quarter and 44-36 early in the fourth quarter.
Kaitlyn Abair led St. Charles with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Mya Brown chipped in 15 points for the Lady Comets.
Benton 76, Hahnville 45: Hahnville (27-5) was held to seven points in the first quarter to trail by nine heading into the second quarter and was down 37-17 at halftime in a battle of Lady Tigers.
Kori Joseph was Hahnville’s only double-figure scorer with 12 points.
Benton (27-5) was led by Qua Chambers’ 27 points while Jada Anderson chipped in 19.
Benton was 20 of 29 from the free-throw line.
Second-seeded Benton advances to take on Natchitoches Central. The No. 16 seed won 40-37 over Sulphur, the No. 6 seed.
